چکیده
Abstract This paper draws out and connects two neglected issues in Kant’s conception of a priori knowledge. Both concern topics that have been central to contemporary epistemology formal particular: knowability luminosity. Does Kant commit some form principle according which certain necessary truths are knowable beings like us? luminosity which, if subject knows , then they can know ? I defend affirmative answers both these questions, by considering the special kind modality involved conceptions possible experience essential completability metaphysics, argue his combination principles leads into difficulty.

The Determinants of Knowability
Many propositions are not known to be true or false, and many phenomena are not understood. What determines what propositions and phenomena are perceived as knowable or unknowable? We tested whether factors related to scientific methodology (a proposition’s reducibility and falsifiability), its intrinsic metaphysics (the materiality of the phenomena and its scope of applicability), and its rela...
متن کاملActuality and Knowability
It is widely believed that for all p, or at least for all entertainable p, it is knowable a priori that (p iff actually p). It is even more widely believed that for all such p, it is knowable that (p iff actually p). There is a simple argument against these claims from five antecedently plausible premises. The argument is given below. Here ‘A’, ‘E’, ‘K’, ‘ ’, ‘^’ stand for ‘Actually’ ‘Someone e...
متن کاملA Solution to Fitch' Paradox of Knowability
There is an argument (first presented by Fitch), which tries to show by formal means that the anti-realistic thesis that every truth might possibly be known, is equivalent to the unacceptable thesis that every truth actually is known (at some time in the past, present or future). First, the argument is presented and some proposals for the solution of Fitch’s Paradox are briefly discussed. Then,...
متن کاملKnowability and a Modal Closure Principle
Does a factive conception of knowability figure in ordinary use? There is some reason to think so. 'Knowable' and related terms such as 'discoverable', 'observable', and 'verifiable' all seem to operate factively in ordinary discourse. Consider the following example, a dialog between colleagues A and B: A: We could be discovered. B: Discovered doing what? A: Someone might discover that we're ha...
متن کاملTime and Knowability in Evolutionary Processes
Historical sciences like evolutionary biology reconstruct past events by using the traces that the past has bequeathed to the present. Markov chain theory entails that the passage of time reduces the amount of information that the present provides about the past. Here we use a Moran process framework to show that some evolutionary processes destroy information faster than others. Our results co...
